WHO WAS THOMAS SANKARA?
Thomas Sankara was a Burkinabè military officer and revolutionary leader who became president of Burkina Faso in 1983.
He became known for his commitment to independence, social justice, self-reliance, and improving the lives of ordinary people.
THE BURKINA FASO REVOLUTION
In 1983, Sankara came to power and launched a revolutionary program aimed at transforming the country.
He renamed the country from Upper Volta to Burkina Faso, meaning “Land of Incorruptible People.”
WHAT HE CHANGED
SELF-RELIANCE
Sankara promoted local production and encouraged Burkina Faso to reduce its dependence on foreign aid and imports.
HEALTH & EDUCATION
His government expanded vaccination programs, promoted literacy, and invested in public health and education.
HIS VISION
Sankara believed African countries should determine their own future, rely on their own resources, and build societies based on dignity, equality, and independence.

On October 15, 1987, Sankara was assassinated during a coup d'état at the age of 37.
