WHO WAS MARCUS GARVEY?
Marcus Mosiah Garvey was a Jamaican leader and one of the most influential voices of the early Pan-African movement.
He believed Black people should take pride in their heritage, build their own institutions, and control their own future.
BUILDING A MOVEMENT
In 1914, Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA).
The movement grew internationally, promoting Black pride, African unity, education, and economic independence.
WHAT HE BUILT
NEGRO WORLD
An international newspaper that spread Garvey's ideas and connected Black communities around the world.
BLACK STAR LINE
A shipping company created to strengthen economic connections between people of African descent and Africa.
HIS VISION
Garvey believed Africa should play a central role in the future of people of African descent. He promoted African self-determination and encouraged Black communities to build their own economic and political power.
HIS STRUGGLES
Garvey's growing influence brought opposition and government scrutiny.
In 1923, he was convicted of mail fraud in the United States. He was later deported to Jamaica.
Although his movement weakened, his ideas continued to spread.
HIS LEGACY
Marcus Garvey helped create a powerful global movement centered on Black pride, unity, self-determination, and independence.
